New Walker Cup format an insult
THE EDITOR, Sir:
I watched the ending moments of the Walker Cup finals a few minutes ago and I wondered what had propelled ISSA to change the format from the one conceptualised in 1961. The intention of the competition then was a challenge cup among the four leading football teams in the Manning Cup.
With the new format, many persons have categorised this competition as 'the losers cup', and rightly so, as with the revised format, the leading teams are excluded from this competition.
I really believe that this new format is an insult to H.N. 'Chicken' Walker, the devoted former general secretary and treasurer of ISSA. I believe that ISSA either needs to revisit its decision as it relates to the format or rename the competition out of respect for Mr Walker, if it believes that this is the format it wants the competition, to maintain going forward.
I ask of ISSA: Why create a cup for those who did not progress to the quarter-final round? And I say, let the best teams vie for all the cups - they deserve so to do.
