SOE crucial to St James safety

Published:Monday | January 21, 2019 | 12:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

In just a few days, the state of public emergency (SOE) in St James will come to an end, and though the Government and national security minister have reassured the public and citizens living in St James that there will still be strong security presence, some citizens are still on the edge.

The truth is, the SOE has reduced the crime rate in St James significantly. My concern is what will happen after January 31.

SOEs are not a permanent solution to the crime problem in St James and Jamaica, but they have reaped great success. For this reason, I think the Opposition should have voted for the extension of the SOEs and worked together with the Government to formulate an effective crime plan.
