Ward Avenue flooded again
THE EDITOR, Sir:
With the ending of fanfare over the millions spent on the completion of the upgrading work on Ward Avenue in Mandeville, heavy rains on Tuesday, January 15, 2019, exposed the inadequacy and myopic planning executed and supervised by the National Works Agency, in collaboration with the Manchester Municipal Corporation, when the roadway was flooded!
What was most shocking, however, was to find a 2' x 3' steel grate drain cover that was placed to handle the excess water that runs in the area. Clearly, the planners are clueless!
One would have hoped that such an error was not endorsed by a professional engineer.
Years before the dismantling of the parish councils in the 1980s, the Public Works Department had engineers who would understand how water settles on corridors and made drainage to complement the expected run-offs.
Clearly, no such evaluation was done in the Ward Avenue area. We need to see imput of sensible engineers in solving flooding in critical flood-prone corridors in the town.
