Letter of the Day | Dismantling gangs should be our priority in 2019
THE EDITOR, Sir:
There have been good signs in the fight against crime in Jamaica in 2018. Much has been accomplished with the imposition of the zone of special operations and the state of emergency. We need to keep the momentum going this year to see greater gain.
Let 2019 be the year that all gang members tremble. Let 2019 be the first year on record where persons begin to hand over illegal guns to the police willingly. Let it be a year in which being called a gang member is like a curse. Let 2019 be the year when all the legislature combine their mental strength to destroy gangs in the country once and for all.
This writer is of the view that when combined, the JCF, JDF, Parliament, and the courts in the land are powerful enough to root out and dismantle all gangs, along with their followers and supporters.
It is possible that the country can be rid of the scourge of criminality and the myopic view of a few.
Are we going to be bold in 2019 and do something new in order to get a new result? Or do we continue to fiddle with crime and gangs until we are overthrown in a Trojan horse-like manner? The decision is ours to make, but we have a good momentum at present. Let’s keep it going!
