Arthur Williams: I complied with my obligations
THE EDITOR, Sir:
I refer to your article published on Wednesday, March 6, 2019, titled ‘Lawmakers, Lawbreakers’, which made reference to “former JLP Senator Arthur Williams” in respect of the filing of returns for the period covered by the Integrity Commission’s report – 2014, 2015 and 2016.
I wish to state for the record that having been appointed to the Senate in 2002, I complied with my obligations under the law for the ensuing twelve years until 2014.
My late compliance in relation to what was to be a final return in November 2014 and for 2015 was in relation to the period when I was not in the Senate, and this was regularised in 2016, when the filings were done. As far as I am aware, my compliance was deemed to have remedied the breach.
Thereafter, I returned to duly complying with the filing of my returns for 2016 and 2017, as required by law.
But for the peculiar circumstances in which I was during that period, I would not have departed from my record of strictly complying with the law. Nonetheless, I take responsibility for the lapse.
