TAJ staff needs to be on the same page

Published:Wednesday | March 13, 2019 | 12:13 AM

I am appalled at the inconsistencies, in terms of information, that my colleagues and I have been receiving from various staff members of Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ).

To provide some context, our situation has changed in recent months, where we have to file our own tax obligations – income tax, National Housing Trust tax, National Insurance Scheme tax and education tax.

We have been seeking individual advice by visiting the offices of TAJ, and each of us has, on our independent visit, received contrasting information.

One of the main areas of concern is that of the 2019 S04a filing. Is payment for this estimate due on March 15, 2019, with penalties applied for non-payment, or are the taxes due on March 15, 2020, but with quarterly prepayment advised?

Another area where clarification is needed is that of expenses for persons on contracts.

TAJ, I suggest you use the Tax Education Unit to get all your staff – clerical to managerial – on the same page.
