Purge the Force of corruption

Published:Tuesday | April 16, 2019 | 12:19 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

It is my view that corruption has played a major role in crime and violence in Jamaica. Too many corrupt officers are in the police force, many of whom are linked to criminal networks across the island. This has compromised the effectiveness of crime-fighting by the security forces. The police force needs to be purged of corruption so that it can better fight crime and restore law and order.

I have heard successive governments talk about dismantling garrisons and ridding the country of gangs and crime. This is yet to be fully materialised. The crime plans are toothless, and hence criminals continue to wreak havoc on society. Citizens are afraid to give information to the police because they do not trust them. This has worsened the problem as criminals are allowed to walk the streets freely and drive fear into law-abiding citizens.

We should be fearless in the fight against crime as we or someone we know may one day fall prey to this monster called crime.
