We should encourage manufacturing

THE EDITOR, Madam:

Listening to the news, I heard the talk of a special mask for health workers rising dramatically in cost.

May I suggest that we commence the manufacturing of these PPE items? We have persons making masks and surgical caps at the cottage-industry level.

Private sector, public sector, we have the brainpower, there is just the need for harnessing and pulling together the human and financial capital.

COVID-19 is creating the imperative to become self-reliant. I am encouraged to see Jamaica exporting toiletries and agro products, which is a move in the right direction.

Jamaica must not be dependent on foreign manufacturers. We need to hone our skills and start a manufacturing environment for our survival.

As Greek philosopher Pluto said: “Necessity is the mother of invention.”
