No to banks only NIS payment
THE EDITOR, Madam:
I write in full support of the position taken by the Jamaica Baptist Union against moving National Insurance Scheme (NIS) payments to banks, as articulated by the Reverend Karl Johnson.
Given the fee structures which currently obtain, NIS pensioners would be placed at a great disservice were this to happen.
In fact, the Ministry of Labour and Social Security ought to be congratulated on the position it has taken in the COVID-19 era of having fortnightly payments at post offices done on any one visit for the month.
May I suggest that this, rather than moving to bank payments, be the norm going forward.
This would greatly assist seniors by reducing their visits to the post office, thus limiting their time on the streets, not to mention saving bus or taxi fare.
