Appreciate the value of freedom
THE EDITOR, Madam:
Freedom must be God’s greatest gift to man for it sets him apart from creatures constrained to act on instinct and thus dignifies him with choice and self-determination.
There is hardly a greater stress on freedom than the current coronavirus pandemic. Exercising freedom becomes problematic and a scarce commodity when selfishness imposes itself and infringes upon the rights of others.
Some people cough freely, in the proximity of others, without wearing masks, and observing social distancing is often disregarded as crowds bump and bore as if it were life as usual.
We see it in the recent resurgence of COVID-19 cases as choices have to be made between economic survival and health. On one side it is the fight to keep people safe from COVID-19 and on the other is how do they earn their livelihood?
We need to learn to value freedom while at the same time being conscious of our choices. If we use freedom to do things that harm others, we are at fault.
