Kingston 8 post office needs attention

Published:Wednesday | December 30, 2020 | 12:16 AM

I am deeply concerned about the state of the Kingston 8 post office. The grass is about six feet tall and is extremely unkempt, especially at Christmas.

Another burning issue I have is that when I went to collect my mail on Sunday, I had to park outside and walk through a pedestrian gate to access my mailbox. I cannot understand why the main gate is padlocked, as parking inside would be a lot more convenient.

The areas of post offices and tax offices should be considered as civic centres, and we should have free access to them at all times of day or night. In fact, this should be the case for all government offices and civic centres across the island.

Another problem I have is that, as pensioners, we are required to pay $2,000 per year for a mailbox at the post office, whereas people who live in the general vicinity of the post office get their mail delivered by a postman and pay nothing, as the money for the stamp should cover the cost of delivery.

With the advent of email and many companies sending out e-statements, in the not-too-distant future the post office will eventually become obsolete. The postmasters and postmistresses need to put their thinking cap on and reinvent themselves before it is too late.
