Clarification on CMU contractual arrangements

Published:Monday | January 11, 2021 | 12:06 AM

THE EDITOR, Madam:

This is with reference to your report of January 5, 2021 regarding Miss Elaine Hayden’s contract with the Caribbean Maritime University (CMU), please note the following:

• Approximately 70 per cent of CMU’s academic and administrative staff are on two to three-year contracts, with virtually all of these contracts expiring in 2020 or 2021.

• The staff has been advised that CMU is seeking to rationalise the permanence of their employment with CMU and that the use of contracts as the preferred method of employment is being assessed. Accordingly, they will continue to be employed on the terms of their most recent contract pending the completion of the assessment.

• The subject of your report, Miss Elaine Hayden’s contract expired in August 2020 but she, along with other staff whose contracts have expired, have been retained pending the completion of the assessment.

I trust that this helps to put in context the information reported and that you will publish this to clarify the issues.
