WIE Conference — Is Ready to Empower

Women In Energy (WIE) is a movement aimed at empowering women to be their authentic selves, while motivating them to reach higher and mentor their younger colleagues. With this commitment in mind, the women of the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) are prepared to deliver an awe-inspiring two-day event beginning tomorrow, that will once again transform and empower.

At the launch of the 2017 WIE Conference last Thursday evening, President and CEO of JPS, Kelly Tomblin emphasised that viewing power differently means that those who are privileged to hold influential positions should realise that they have the ability to create real change.

“We have been plagued by a lack of diversity. We are for diversity. That is the energy we see. We are committed to doing power differently, and when I say do power differently, I have an idea to eliminate hierarchy, giving everyone a voice while making sure it’s not 'little people, big people'; 'people who have and people who don’t have,'” Tomblin said.

Sheena Woodburn, technical officer at PetroCaribe and participant in last year’s conference shared that WIE came when she needed it the most. The life-changing experience has left her empowered, renewed, refocused and energised.

“Through self-assessment and renewal, I found the voice I always knew I had. I refocused my goals and sought to achieve them with confidence and determination. Through my eyes, WIE was not just a conference, it was a wave, a message, a calling and a movement that transitioned into friendships, family and a community of energised, powerful and inspired individuals,” she said.

This year’s staging promises to be even better as participants include Oscar Award-winner Lesley Goldwasser, Olympian Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, and outstanding corporate leaders and entrepreneurs. In addition to the amazing line up, WIE has introduced an all-male panel of leaders who will share their perspective and outlook on female leadership and how both genders can grow, develop and lead together.

The 2017 WIE Conference takes place at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel in New Kingston.
