Harvard professor for venture capital conference

On Tuesday, September 9, the Development Bank of Jamaica, through the Jamaica Venture Capital Programme, will host the second annual Venture Capital Conference at the Jamaica Conference Centre, downtown Kingston. Participants will get their money's worth from the full day of interesting activities, starting with registration at 7:30 a.m.

The keynote speaker is professor and author Josh Lerner, Harvard Business School, but there will also be a number of other knowledgeable presenters on a wide range of topics at the conference, which will be chaired by Derek Jones, attorney-at-law. At 9 a.m., Finance and Planning Minister Dr Peter Phillips will officially open the conference, followed by Professor Lerner's presentation titled, 'Why public efforts to boost entrepreneurship and venture capital have failed and what to do about it'.

His presentation will be followed by a question-and-answer session and a plenary panel with presenter Diana Smallridge of International Financial Consulting Limited. This will be moderated by LIME Caribbean's Chris Dehring. Immediately thereafter will be a panel discussion featuring Susana Garcia Robles, chief investment officer; Robert Almeida, partner in Portland Equity Inc; and Diana Smallridge, president of International Financial Consulting.

Other presentations

There will be networking opportunities during the lunch break and when the conference resumes at 1:45 p.m., there will be a presentation by the UWI Consulting Inc's Dr Keith Nurse and a panel discussion titled, 'The creative economy, sports, culture and growth - is venture capital a game changer for the creative industries?' Presenters will be Dr Keith Nurse, executive director of UWI Consulting Inc; Horace Madison, CEO of Madison Strategic Group; Bruce James, president of MVP Track Club; and Jeffrey Cobham, venture capital investor.

Other topics to be covered in last two sessions of the day include backing women business entrepreneurs, fuelling a hub for innovation, and getting deals done. And, among the other slated heavyweight participants/panellists are Sandra Glasgow, Lisa Bell, Douglas Lindo, Gordon Swaby, Chris Williams, Dr Henry Lowe and Marlene Street Forrest.
