KINGSTON, Jamaica:

Chairman of the Jamaica Urban Transit Company Board, Reverend Dr Garnett Roper says the suggestion that public sector workers should pay concessionary fares on JUTC buses is ludicrous.

The suggestion was made by Jamaica Civil Service Association President Oniel Grant at a meeting with Transport Minister, Dr Omar Davies last week.

However, according to Reverend Roper, until the government changes the country’s laws or adjusts public policy, the JUTC cannot grant concessionary fares to the nation’s 135,000 civil servants.

The JUTC Chairman is also asking why such a concession should be granted in the first place.

JCSA's President Oniel Grant says the recent JUTC fare increases are especially hard on civil servants who have been under a wage freeze for the last five years.

However, Roper says the entire country has had to forego wage increases.

He adds that the hundreds of thousands of persons in rural Jamaica paying the real cost of transportation are not subsidised, even though they pay their taxes.
