Roper says JUTC or Davies did not deceive stakeholders on fare rollback
The chairman of the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC), Dr Garnet Roper, is dismissing claims that the bus company and Transport Minister Dr Omar Davies deliberately misled stakeholders on a rollback of the fare increases.
The issue has prompted the Jamaica Civic Service Association to report that it has lost confidence in the leadership of the JUTC Chairman and Davies.
According to the association’s president O’Neil Grant, Roper and the Transport Minister have been arrogant and dishonest.
Grant says last Friday stakeholders were invited at a meeting to discuss alternatives to the fare increase for the JUTC.
According to him, it later emerged that the Government and the JUTC had no plans to roll back the increase but just called a meeting to pacify stakeholders.
He further says stakeholders were blindsided as a few hours after being told that the fare increase would be put on hold, an announcement was made by Transport Ministry that the Cabinet had approved changes but the effective date of Sunday, August 24 would remain.
The Jamaica Civic Service Association president says this situation has left stakeholders seriously disappointed and doubtful that the JUTC or the Transport Minister is really committed to consultation.
However, the JUTC’s Chairman says the claims are untrue.
Roper maintains that at no time did the JUTC or the Transport Minister attempt to deceive stakeholders.
