All about the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4

Published:Monday | September 1, 2014 | 12:00 AM

Tablets seem to be coming in every shape and size these days, and 90 per cent of them are being made by Samsung. Samsung seems to have a size or shape tablet to fit almost all personal preference. So, imagine my surprise when I was greeted by a small seven inch tablet made by Samsung. This week, we will be taking a closer look at the Samsung Galaxy Tab4 [7.0] to see its full potential. Samsung has rolled out their new Galaxy Tab 4 line, which contains both seven and eight inch variants, plus a ten inch model, but our focus is on the seven inch variant this week. Let's get the device specifications out the way so we can head to the meat of the matter.

Key Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Features

Size and weight: 4.25" x 7.36" x 0.35," 9.74 oz

Display: 7", 1280 x 800 WXGA TFT

Camera: 3MP rear, 1.3MP front

OS: Google™ Android™ 4.4 (KitKat)

Processor: 1.2 GHz Quad-Core processor

RAM: 1.5GB RAM

Battery: 4000 mAh battery

Memory: 8GB storage, expandable via microSD card to 32GB

Connectivity: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth® 4.0

Hardware

The Tab 4 has a textured plastic backing as most Samsung devices do, but this textured plastic back doesn't pick up fingerprints, and it's incredibly scratch-resistant. So the worries of damaging the paint job on your newly bought Tab 4 are low. The Galaxy Tab 4 is a 7-inch device which is small and lightweight. It's also easy to hold with an estimated thickness of 0.35 inch. Weight is also a non-issue as well at just 0.6 pound. The screen on the Tab 4 is actually amazing for a reasonably budget tablet. For a price tag that circles around the $30,000 mark you will get a bright display with a good viewing angle which is great for reading and watching movies. Other noteworthy hardware parts on the Tab 4 includes a headphone jack at the top of the device, a micro-USB charging socket on the bottom, a speaker, 3-megapixel camera around back, a 1.3MP on the front and a IR blaster on the side.

Software

The user interface is a bit different than what most Samsung users would be use to, but on the flip side it is a pleasant change to the interface. Everything looks well organised, the icons and text are readable, and everything is easy to find. The multi-window feature is present as well which can be opened by swiping from the edge of the screen on any page. The interface has been redone with flatter and white status bar icons which is a main feature Android 4.4 KitKat.

Final Thoughts

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 interface is fluid with multi-user support, and Kids Mode present. When it's all said and done, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 has some decent improvement over the Galaxy Tab 3 series which makes it a solid purchase.
