Mayor of May Pen Scean Barnswell is insistent he will rid the streets of the capital of all illegal vendors.

The mayor says he has already put measures in place to completely remove all street vendors following a recent stabbing incident involving a vendor and a municipal officer.

The municipal police officer was stabbed on Main Street after an altercation developed when he approached a vendor while carrying out routine operations.

The vendor was reportedly among a group of vendors who were asked to move from the location as they were obstructing pedestrians.

The alleged perpetrator has since been accosted and taken into custody.

Meanwhile, Inspector Daniel Campbell says the municipal police should be granted the power of arrest to help prevent future occurrences like these.

He says some officers are already expressing fear for their lives while carrying out their duties.
