Ferguson seeks help from Diplomatic community to arrest chikungunya

Published:Tuesday | September 30, 2014 | 12:32 PM

Health Minister Dr Fenton Ferguson is appealing to members of the Diplomatic community to assist in reducing the spread of the chikungunya virus.

He says the impression that fogging alone can solve the problem has to be corrected as the process only kills adult mosquitoes.

He made the appeal during a meeting this morning with representatives of the Diplomatic Corps and UN agencies held at the Pan American Health Organization.

Ferguson says the Government alone cannot lead the effort to contain the spread of the virus.

The Health Minister argues that an integrated response and partnership with every sector of the society is required.

He says reducing the breeding sites for mosquitoes is the only real and effective way to slow the spread of chikungunya which is spread by the Aedes aegypti mosquito.

Ferguson has been criticised for not leading a comprehensive process to have Jamaicans fully prepared to handle the outbreak of the virus.

A statement from the Health Ministry says Ferguson will also be meeting with representatives of the Private Sector Organization of Jamaica, the Jamaica Employers Federation and Food for the Poor this week.
