ST ANN'S BAY, St Ann:MEMBERS OF the St Ann Lay Magistrates' Association held a civic ceremony recently to thank retired Custos Radcliffe O 'Rocky' Walters for his years of service to the parish.

Walters served as justice of the peace and later custos rotulorum, a post he held for over 14 years before he retired last year.

The event, held on the lawns of the Seville Heritage Park in St Ann's Bay, had Governor General Sir Patrick Allen in attendance, so too his wife, current Custos Norma Walters, Custos of Trelawny Paul Muschett, retired Custos of St Mary A. 'Bobby' Pottinger, Member of Parliament for North East St Ann Shahine Robinson, Dr Roosevelt Crooks, chairman of the Ocho Rios Resort Board, James Walsh, who read the prime minister's message, among others.

The governor general, in his greetings, lauded Walters for his contribution and highlighted some of his achievements, including the creation of St Ann Homecoming and Heritage Foundation and the Marcus Garvey Resource Centre, which was opened on Garvey's birthday on August 17, 2012.

"Your exemplary volunteerism, easy accessibility, good neighbourliness and pleasant personality endeared you to the people of St Ann," Allen told Walters.

"You had an admirable relationship with your fellow custodes who looked to you for leadership and guidance especially when you served as senior custos and when you acted as governor general. I have truly enjoyed working with you Mr Walters."

The prime minister's message and the citation, read by Daphne Hall-Brown, hailed Walter's service to his fellow man.

truly a blessing

In his reply, the retired custos recognised those who supported him along the way, stating that "the opportunity to be among members of the St Ann Justices of the Peace Association and the people of St Ann was not only an honour, but truly a blessing."

Walters added: "I am humbled by the kind sentiments expressed about my stewardship as the custos rotulorum for the parish, an office I had the privilege of occupying for 14 and half years.

"If my tenure was commendable, let me assure you that it was not my effort alone; it was only possible because of the grace of God, the support and encouragement I received from my family and friends and members of the St Ann Justices of the Peace Association, including our four past chairmen who are here with us this evening, and all the leaders of the various zones, the business community, the citizens of the parish, staff and the office of the governor general. To you all, I say a big thank you."
