Chik-V hotline set up

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management has announced the setting up of a hotline for members of the public to report suspected chikungunya cases.

The number is 1-888-225-5637.

ODPEM says the hotline is not an emergency number, as it is only intended for monitoring and reporting suspected chik-V cases and identification of mosquito breeding sites.

Meanwhile, an appeal is being made to distributors of paracetamol and insect repellent not to withhold these items or increase the prices unnecessarily as the demand for the products surge.

ODPEM says the National Emergency Operation Center has been activated to provide coordination and monitoring support.

It is urging members of the public to continue to heed precautions for prevention, and take the necessary steps to avoid mosquito breathing areas.

The public is also being further advised that in keeping with the World Health Organization and the Pan American Health Organization, Jamaica has heightened monitoring for Ebola.

ODPEM says the Ministry of Health remains vigilant, and has intensified screening of in-bound passengers at air and sea ports to protect Jamaica’s borders against a possible Ebola spread.
