Marshall-Burnett never died from chik-V complications, says family
The family of former Senate president, Syringa Marshall-Burnett, has released a statement correcting earlier reports about the cause of her death.
According to the statement, Marshall-Burnett did not die from complications following the chikungunya virus.
"Her death was not chickungunya related, and we, her family, wish to refute any such statements made in the press and on social media," said a family spokesperson.
Marshall-Burnett, a former politician, nurse and educator, died on Friday night in hospital.
The governing People's National Party of which she was a member, and the Opposition have led tributes for Marshall-Burnett who they describe as a pioneer who worked quietly, but effectively in the areas of politics and nursing education.
