Be aware and prepared
I commend the Jamaica Fire Brigade for once again bringing the issues of safety and protection to the centre of public attention during the observance of Fire Safety Awareness Week, October 26 to November 1.
The choice of theme - 'Community in Action … Supporting Fire Prevention' - is both appropriate and timely, in that while members of the Fire Brigade are there to 'save lives and protect property', the community also has a key role to play among the first responders.
I encourage Jamaicans in communities across the country to use the occasion of this observance and the accompanying activities as opportunities to build levels of awareness and action in fire prevention and safety of their personal and community property. For example, community action can help ensure fire hydrants are operational and avoid making false alarms or even assist the injured. Learn how you can help and be part of your personal and community safety and protection brigade.
I extend my best wishes and sincere appreciation to all our firefighters, often unsung heroes, for their work under difficult and life-threatening conditions. With ever increasing demands for your services and the invaluable role played in minimising loss of lives, injury to persons and damage to property from fires, natural disasters, accidents and other emergencies, members of the fire services remain in a virtual state of continuous high alert.
May you enjoy great success and support as you continue your invaluable contribution to nation building.
