THE GROUNDS of the Our Lady of the Angels Prep School in Kingston were filled with laughter and cheer yesterday as the institution celebrated United Nations Day.

"We as a school recognise the significance of this day and acknowledge it on an annual basis by having a celebration. This year, we are a little late because of a very full calendar so we are celebrating belatedly," Joyce Archibald, acting principal of the institution, told The Gleaner.

"This celebration reminds us that the purpose of the United Nations is to bring all nations of the world together and work for peace and development based on the principles of justice, human dignity, and the well-being of all people," she added.

Archibald noted that it is important for the children to understand the principle of working together to attain peace from a young age.

"They need to know about our interdependence with other nations, the proclamation of peace and the economic good that can be derived from such a cooperation," she added.

She said that the feedback from the parents and students was quite overwhelming.

"I heard parents saying that they had learnt a lot today (yesterday). The children also did as they had to prepare for the event which involved research, and so they too are exposed to the nations of the world,"Archibald said.
