Man held for 1,000lbs of ganja

The police are holding a man in custody following the seizure of about one thousand pounds of marijuana on Sunday night.



The seizure was made by police personnel attached to the Transnational Crime and Narcotics Division.



The police report that about 10 o’clock Sunday night, they were conducting an operation on the Foreshore Main Road in Portland, where they intercepted a motor vehicle.



The motor vehicle was searched and 129 parcels of compressed marijuana were allegedly found inside the vehicle.



The police say another vehicle which was found abandoned along the road was searched and 53 parcels of compressed marijuana were also found in it.



The police estimated that the combined 182 parcels of compressed ganja have a street value of about $3.5 million.



The police say the man in custody was the driver of the first vehicle.



They are withholding the identity of the man pending further investigations.
