KINGSTON, Jamaica:

The Jamaica Fire Brigade says an exhaust pipe at Island Grill is the source of the fire at the Sovereign Centre shopping complex in Liguanea, St Andrew.

There have been no reports of injuries and a policeman says the building has been evacuated.

Emeleo Ebanks, the public relations officer of the Jamaica Fire Brigade, told The Gleaner that a unit from the Half-Way Tree fire station has contained the fire to the restaurant located on shopping centre’s ground floor.

However, he says there will be some difficulty in putting out the blaze because of the possible presence of grease in the exhaust pipe.

The exhaust pipe, similar to the muffler in vehicles, conveys exhaust and fumes from the kitchen.

Ebanks says so far, there has been no structural damage to the restaurant.

Earlier, the Matilda’s Corner Police told our news centre that they received a fire report about 9:20 a.m.
