WTS Push-up Challenge reaches target
It's mission accomplished for the Water Tanks In Schools (WTS) Push-up Challenge.
The challenge was started by Digicel executive Trisha Williams-Singh and Olympian Juliet Cuthbert-Flynn in early September. Their goal was to raise $500,000 by the end of November and they've done it. Williams-Singh expressed delight at fulfilling the goal.
"It is so emotional, I don't have much words," she said. "I'm just very heartened and thankful." She said 33 schools will benefit from the amount of money raised. The WTS Push-up Challenge has delivered tanks to New Forest Primary, Junior high and Infant School; St Margaret's Basic School; Middleton Primary School; Port Henderson Primary School; Mt Pleasant Mission City Basic School; Pedro Plains Primary School; God's Basic School; Gregory Park All-Age School; Mocho Basic School; Rock Primary School; Wood Hall Primary School; Caymanas Garden Basic School; George Headley Primary School; and Red Hills Basic School.
"Hopefully, they (the tanks) can all be delivered before Christmas so schools will have them before the new term," she said. But despite the goal having been achieved, Williams-Singh confirmed the challenge was not over yet as there were still schools that needed assistance.
Donations still welcome
"We will keep the account open and continue to push the need for persons to donate and do the challenge so, eventually, all schools in Jamaica will have adequate number of tanks," she said. Williams-Singh sent a big 'thank you' to all the companies that participated in the challenge. They are CB Chicken, Digicel, The Jamaica Pegasus, Jamaica Yellow Pages, Courtleigh Hotel, Stewart's Auto Group of Companies, Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority, Cuthbert Fitness Studio, The Gleaner Company, Creative Media and Events, and Phase 3 Production. Rototech International provided the Rhino water tanks. Williams-Singh also lauded the individuals who learned about the challenge and pitched in to support the worthy cause.
Like the ALS Challenge (from which Williams-Singh and Cuthbert-Flynn got the idea), those nominated have 24 hours to complete the task. Having accepted, participants can either choose to attempt 10 push-ups and donate $500 after completing them, or just donate $1,000 if they feel they can't manage. Anyone who attempted the push-ups and failed had to pay $1,000. The aforementioned National Commercial Bank account number is 371088881, and donations can be made at any branch.
