Marketing expert imparts wisdom to UWI students
Getting advice is good and it's even better when it is given by a seasoned professional like Mitchell Watson, Pepsi's marketing manager. On Thursday, November 20 Watson addressed marketing students at the University of the West Indies Mona School of Business and Management.
He gave them some golden nuggets of advice when he was their guest lecturer for one class.
With his roots in rural Jamaica, Watson has always excelled in everything he does, both in his role as country manager for Red Bull Jamaica and group public relations manager for the ATL/Sandals Group. This has armed him with some of the experience he can now pass on to young, talented students. Watson began his lecture by giving students the opportunity to ask questions, telling them he didn't want to just come and "speak at them".
The class fired questions at Watson regarding sponsorship of events and how they work, and how to get a good return on an investment, among other subjects that Watson happily enlightened them on. Of particular positive significance to the students was his suggestion that they "create a job instead of looking for one when you leave school".
Students also sought answers about how to properly market certain products, and about Pepsi's latest addition to the brand list - Adrenaline Red Fire. The plethora of questions continued even as Watson was leaving the hall.
Sheldon Whyte, president of the UWI Marketing Association said that "for a man of Watson's credentials and experience to come and speak to them showed how dedicated Pepsi Jamaica is to giving back and educating the future generation, we are proud to have them as a partner of the UWI Marketing Association."
