Fifteen donors, who made possible more than $4.5 million in scholarships for 28 students, were recognised recently at the University of the West Indies Development and Endowment Fund - Mona (UWIDEF-Mona) annual Donor Recognition and Scholarship Awards, held at The Knutsford Court Hotel in St Andrew.

UWIDEF provides funding for scholarships through the Office Student Financing, as part of its mandate to support the UWI Mona campus. Funding is provided through the support of several donors who contribute small sums annually, as well as those who provide specific named awards.

donors

Among the donors were LIME Foundation and Nationwide News Network, who were providing scholarships for the first time. The LIME Foundation provided $1.5 million as part of its 10th anniversary celebrations, benefiting six students. Other donors include Tastee Limited, which has been providing scholarship support since 1996.

In bringing greetings, principal of the mona campus, Professor Archibald McDonald, highlighted the importance of the work of UWIDEF and particularly the contribution of the donors to ensuring students are able to access a university education. This, he noted, is in the context of the current economic situation and difficulties faced in general financing.

UWIDEF directors

Also in attendance at the event were directors of the UWIDEF board, Earl Jarrett, who was also master of ceremonies; Karl Wright; Minna Israel, senior adviser to the vice-chancellor on resource development; Errol Miller, chairman of LIME Foundation; Lennie Gordon, general manager, Nationwide News Network; Dr Stephen Lofters; and Troy Cockings, director of LIME Foundation.

Since its incorporation in 1990, the UWIDEF-Mona brokers, builds and sustains relationships with UWI Mona's friends. It provides stewardship for funds raised through major capital campaigns and projects, general endowment and planned giving. UWIDEF-Mona has implemented a number of major projects; provided grants and scholarships for both undergraduate studies and postgraduate research; and established various facilities for students.
