Spanish Town lights up for the holidays

SPANISH TOWN, St Catherine:IT WAS an occasion for the children of Spanish Town and its environs last Friday evening, as the St Catherine Parish Council staged its annual Christmas tree-lighting and children's treat in Emancipation Square.
More than 300 children of all ages turned out to participate in an event that saw a dismal attendance from their adult counterparts. They were entertained by local acts in an evening of fun and frolic and were given toys, gifts and provided with refreshments.
The event got off to a late start with the organisers waiting to see if threatening clouds would produce showers that could severely dampen the occasion.
Patron of the event, Spanish Town Mayor Norman Scott, while expressing pleasure at seeing those in attendance, decried the turnout, stating that when compared to last year, there was twice as many people in attendance.
"I don't know if it's because of the late start, it rained last year and many more people turned out. I am, however, pleased to see all of you who are here," said Scott.
He paid special tribute to the sponsors who have been supportive of the treat over the years, publicly recognising West Indies Home Contractors Ltd, the major sponsor of the event.
