JUTC ends 'Pay for Other' option, claims abuse of feature

The Jamaica Urban Transit Company says it will no longer allow customers to use their Smarter Cards to pay concessionary fares for other passengers.

The announcement comes at the state-owned bus company tries to stem revenue leakage.

It says as of January 5, the 'Pay for Other' feature on the company’s Electronic Fare Collection System will only allow payment of adult passenger fares of $120 on use of the 'Pay for Other' icon.

It says concession passengers whose fares are paid for them by other card holders will now have to get their own Smarter Cards or pay the full adult fare of $120.

The JUTC says it was forced to take this action because of abuse of the 'Pay for Other' feature by passengers who use it access concession fares for people who should be paying the adult fare.

It says this has resulted in the company losing thousands of dollars.
