Promoter honours mother’s memory with gospel show
Growing up in the Bellevue district in St Elizabeth, Gurvan Whitely's mother, Doris Louise Whitely, made a big impression on him. A woman of faith, she served as a bishop at the Mount Zion Church of Christ the Redeemed in Mall Hole, St Elizabeth.
His mother has since made her transition, and for her son, a fitting tribute to honour her memory is a gospel concert, set to take place on Boxing Day, December 26.
Presented by DLW Give Back Foundation in association with his late mother's church, Whitely said it's the only fitting way to honour her memory and also give back to the community she was from.
In an interview with Rural Xpress, the promoter shared memories of his mother.
"My mother was a woman of God. She was passionate about what she did and was an active member in the community for over 50 years. She had a soft heart for others, and this is something she would have done. I can't bring her back, but I can keep her memory alive through this important initiative. It is about honouring her legacy," he said.
Billed to perform on the show, which is dubbed Gospel Concert Extravaganza are George Nooks, Jabez, Glen Graham, Bunny Anderson, and Eric Bryan.
Commenting on the event, Gurvan said it's the first of an annual event and he is also pushing for the involvement of surrounding churches in the area.
"As part of interacting with the communities, if there are those who think they can really sing, then on that day, we will have a talent competition prior to the main event with the winner receiving a cash prize," he said.
Proceeds from the event will be going to his late mother's church, Mount Zion. The event will begin at 6 p.m.
