As of today, the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) will no longer allow customers to use their Smarter Cards to pay concessionary fares for other passengers.

The company announced last year that come today, January 5, the Pay for Other feature on the company’s Electronic Fare Collection System would only allow payment of adult passenger fares when using the “Pay for Other” icon.

It says concession passengers whose fares are paid for them by other card holders will now have to get their own Smarter Cards or pay the full adult fare of $120.

The JUTC says it was forced to take this action because of abuse of the 'Pay for Other' feature by passengers who use it to access concession fares for people who should be paying the adult fare.

And the company said it was losing thousands of dollars in revenue.

Concession passengers are students, the elderly and the disabled.

Meanwhile, the JUTC is discounting the cost for concession passengers to replace SmarterCards which have been lost or damaged.

The JUTC says up to Saturday of this week, it will cost $200 instead of $500 for concession passengers to replace their lost or damaged cards.
