'I cant think of a better choice', Witter on new public defender
Former public defender Earl Witter says he can think of no better choice for public defender than Arlene Harrison Henry.
His comment follows the announcement by the Governor General, Sir Patrick Allen yesterday that Harrison Henry has been appointed to the post and is to be sworn in on Friday.
Witter has congratulated her for being appointed to the post saying it is as if she has been preparing for the post all her life based on her human rights advocacy over the years.
However, Witter says she faces enormous challenges and will need everyone's support.
He stayed clear of commenting on whether there would be friction between the new public defender and her deputy, Matondo Mukulu, who had also applied for the post.
There has been controversy surrounding the appointment, especially after it came to light that Witter had written a letter in which he said Mukulu is not competent to lead the office.
Meanwhile, Witter says a while he does not want to say what Harrison Henry's priorities should be, he believes she should look at the way in which the Tivoli Commission of enquiry is being handled by the office.
