No table Irish potato imported last year, says Kellier

Agriculture Minister, Derrick Kellier, says Jamaica did not import table Irish potato last year.

According to him, this is one of the outstanding achievements of the sector.

He attributes the non-importation of the produce to the efforts of the 220,000 local farmers who were able to meet demands in their production.

Data indicates that 2014 saw the best Irish potato crop in 60 years with production of some 11 million kilograms.

For this year, Kellier says the focus will be on a major reduction in the importation of onion and continuing the drive in the production of table Irish potato, among other things.
