The South East Regional Health Authority (SERHA) says it will be adding 28 bed spaces at the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH) in an effort to meet demand.

SERHA Board Chairman Dr Andrei Cooke says the Region recently signed a contract valued at $22.9 million for the renovation of the William Ward at KPH.

He adds that the contractor has taken possession of the site and work on the project has started.

Cooke says the William Ward will become a male ward for internal medicine, providing care for patients with chronic non-communicable diseases.

It will also host the hospital's cardiology unit.

He says the renovation project is expected to last for eight months and is being funded by the National Health Fund.

The scope of work includes roofing, steel work, painting, installation of flooring and bathroom fixtures.
