Seven spellers have advanced to this afternoon's final of The Gleaner's Children's Own Spelling Bee Competition.

They are:

Britney Allen from deCarteret College - Manchester

Alliyah Deroux of Glen Stuart Primary - St Elizabeth

Jehu Bent of Kingston College - Kingston

Sara-Beth McPherson of Holy Childhood High - St Andrew

Greig Campbell of St Mary High School - St Mary

Sowande Brown from Tomlinson Christian Academy - St Ann

Jessica McKnight of Unity Primary School - Westmoreland

The other spellers who were eliminated in the semi finals are:

Shauna Taylor of Airy Castle Primary - St Thomas

Nickolai Roberts from Port Antonio Primary - Portland

Abhinav Nallapati, student of Glenmuir Prep - Clarendon

Anuoke Matthews, student of Spanish Town Primary - St Catherine

Natahlia Miller of Hague Primary & Infant - Trelawny

Shaquille Chapman, a student of John's Hall All Age - St James

Jemoy Jarrett, Bethel Primary & Junior High - Hanover

Very early in the competition Jessica McKnight inadvertently began spelling FALCON, the word given to a previous contestant.

She caught herself midway though her spelling, however rules disallowed her from changing letters she previously said. Her word was GADGET.

Other words missed by the students were gazetteer, harangue, obsolete, seismic, gerontology, nonchalant and rapport.

Tajaun Gibbison of Knox College won last year's competition.
