UPDATE: UWI postpones campus events amid tension following student attack on campus

The University of the West Indies, (UWI) Mona has postponed the Homecoming Parade and Flag Raising Ceremony which were scheduled for this afternoon, amid tension on the campus following Tuesday night's attack on a female student.



The first-year student received head injuries during the attack.



Her attacker, a male student has been arrested.



The UWI says the events have been postponed until further notice.



In a release a short while ago, the UWI condemned the incident in which the female student was injured on its Mona campus.



It has also announced that it is consulting internal and external experts on violence and conflict resolution in order to determine the extent and nature of the problem on campus and to develop appropriate measures to address any underlying issues.

The female student was taken to the University Hospital of the West Indies, where she was treated and has been released.



The male student involved in the incident has been arrested by the Police and charged with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm.



The University is now conducting investigations into the matter to determine what steps will need to be taken.



The University wishes to reiterate that it takes a zero tolerance approach to any act of violence perpetrated by staff and/or students, and wishes to assure members of the University community, parents and the general public that investigations into the matter began on Wednesday, February 11, when the report was first received.



The University is also consulting internal and external experts on violence and conflict resolution in order to determine the extent and nature of the problem and to develop appropriate measures to address any underlying issues.



The UWI, Mona wishes to remind members of the community that under its Code of Principles and Responsibilities for Students, students should not engage in conduct which will endanger their own safety or that of other persons, and that they should avoid engaging in activities which are likely to cause personal injury.



Behaviour contrary to this norm is subject to disciplinary action from the University.



Where it is found that that there has been a serious violation of conduct, a Disciplinary Committee will be established to hear and determine the complaints made against the persons involved.



Serious violations may also result in criminal charges being brought against perpetrators.



The UWI, Mona is also working to improve the mechanisms for students to report any acts of violence or situations in which they feel uncomfortable.



Students are reminded that the University Health Centre has a 24-hour online & telephone counselling service for anyone needing assistance.



The telephone number for that service, which is known as UWI/HELP, is 294-0042.



Members of the community are also urged to report acts of violence to the Mona Police at telephone number 927-2298 or Ext 2331 or Campus Security at 935-8749.



In light of the situation, The UWI, Mona has taken the decision to postpone the Homecoming Parade and Flag Raising Ceremony which were scheduled for this afternoon, Thursday, February 12, 2015, until further notice.
