Wolmer's Boys' School old boy, Lloyd Carney, is giving Wolmerians and friends the opportunity to double the value of their donations to the school.

On hearing of the Wolmer's community mobilising to build a new auditorium, Carney made an offer in mid January to match contributors' donations to the project.

For every dollar of new donations, he will match it, up to US$150,000. All donations must be made before April 15, 2015, at which time his offer expires.

Carney was born in Kingston and attended Wolmer's Boys' School up to 1979. He departed for Boston in the United States (US) to pursue studies to become an electrical engineer.

Carney has enjoyed a profitable journey from Jamaica to Silicon Valley, becoming a highly sought-after executive and venture capitalist.

He is CEO of the NASDAQ-listed technology company, Brocade Communications Systems Inc, which has revenues exceeding US$2 billion per year.

He has also established Carney Global Ventures LLC, an early round investor focused on proven individuals with creative technology ideas.

philanthropic organisation

In 1999, Carney and his wife established The Lloyd and Carole Carney Foundation, a philanthropic organisation with focuses on children's needs and health care. The foundation supports schools and hospitals, as well as scholarship programmes in Jamaica, Haiti, the United States and Africa.

He is an active contributor to the Silicon Valley Start-up Common (SVSC), an ecosystem of entrepreneurs, mentors and investors, who help to get start-ups going and growing. Carney also works with the Girls and Boys Clubs of the Peninsula in Silicon Valley.
