Safety audit to be done on new road projects

Police and Hawkeye representatives gather information at the scene of an accident along East Street in Kingston last month. The driver of the motorcycle was admitted to hospital reportedly in serious condition.

A safety audit will be conducted on all new road projects to be undertaken in the island.

Speaking at the launch of a road safety campaign yesterday, Minister with responsibility for Housing in the Ministry of Transport, Dr Morais Guy, said the outcome from the audit will be incorporated into the design of the roads.

Guy explained that this forms part of the strategy of the Ministry to provide proper infrastructure that will benefit all users of the island’s road network, particularly the most vulnerable.

However, Guy said despite improvements and the latest features in vehicles to improve road safety, the drivers and operators of those vehicles must play a greater role in ensuring that fatalities are minimised.

He notes that the number of road fatalities for 2014 totalled 330 while there have been 35 since the start of the year.
