Pastor of the Phillipo Baptist Church in Spanish Town Jeffrey McKenzie is tipped to be the next Custos of St Catherine.

A well placed source told The Gleaner Power 106 News Centre that the Rev McKenzie was scheduled to be sworn in earlier this year by Governor General Sir Patrick Allen in a ceremony at Kings House, but the ceremony was pushed back to a date to be announced.

His impending appointment comes as a result of the resignation of sitting Custos Sophia Azan who after 12 years was forced to submit her resignation because of new legislation putting a age limit on how long custodes can serve.

The Rev McKenzie who is married with three adult children was born in the parish of St Mary where he received his early education at the Wallington primary school.

He first pursued his theological studies at the Jamaica Bible College in Mandeville and then at the United Theological College of the West Indies.

Rev McKenzie has a distinguished record as a Baptist minister, pastoring churches in Trelawny, St Elizabeth and Kingston before taking over the historic Phillipo Baptist Church in 1995.

He is a past president of the Jamaica Baptist Union, also served in eight executive positions on that body.

When contacted for comments the Rev Mckenzie, while acknowledging that the initial swearing in ceremony was postponed, declined to disclosed the new date, stating that the Governor General is the best person to make that announcement.
