Opposition Leader Andrew Holness says more consideration should be given to increasing the capacity of the May Pen Hospital in Clarendon.

The hospital has been grappling with a number of issues and things came to a head last month when scores of angry residents protested outside the institution.

However, speaking after a tour of the hospital yesterday, Holness says his understanding is that an influx of persons coming from Old Harbour, in St Catherine, is creating a significant stress on the resources there.

As a result, he says far more attention should be paid to increasing the capacity of the hospital to meet the demands.

The May Pen Hospital was the first stop for the Jamaica Labour Party’s (JLP) tour of major health facilities islandwide.

The JLP says the tour will help to put greater focus on the country's ailing health sector and get a first-hand look at the shortcomings at public hospitals so that it can formulate solutions to properly address these problems.
