Technology Minister Phillip Paulwell has admitted that there is little the Government can do to prevent students from visiting inappropriate websites on the hundreds of tablets distributed to schools.

Fielding questions from the parliamentary opposition during the Standing Finance Committee of Parliament on Tuesday, Paulwell acknowledged that there were major issues of hacking under the Tablets in Schools programme.

The minister told his parliamentary colleagues that it was very difficult to block certain sites, noting that the ministry has tried unsuccessfully to do so.

He said the ministry has embarked on an exercise to encourage parents and teachers to monitor the children with the tablets.

At the same time, Paulwell pointed out that the tracking devices are working.

He said of the nine tablets stolen since the start of the programme, five have been recovered.
