ICT/BPO policy in the works
Jamaica is to create a national information and communications technology/business process outsourcing (ICT/BPO) policy aimed at regulating the sector which is said to be the fastest growing in the country.
Some $8.6 million has been earmarked in the 2015-2016 Estimates of Expenditure to assist in the preparation of the policy. Among the targets set is for the conducting of a SWOT (strength, weakness, opportunities and threats) analysis of Jamaica's BPO industry and its potential for investment.
The money will also be spent on reviewing existing initiatives, programmes and plans for all government entities engaged in the ICT/BPO industry to identify areas of duplication and recommend strategies for enhanced coordination and collaboration.
The Jamaican government has set its sight on getting 15,000 jobs in the ICT/BPO sector within the next five years, but said despite strong demand, the country needs both human resources and space to improve the country's chances.
