The Housing Agency of Jamaica (HAJ) is expected to complete 320 housing solutions by March next year.

The 320 houses are to be completed in Belle Air, St Ann, and Luana, St Elizabeth.

Dr Morais Guy, minister without portfolio in the Ministry of Transport, Works and Housing, said these projects represent a continuation of initiatives started by the previous political administration.

In addition to the 320 houses to be completed this year, a further 1,249 are to be started by March next year.

The HAJ is projecting to deliver 2,212 houses by March 2018. Some $1.1 billion is to be spent on the project which will see houses constructed in Penwood Road, St Andrew; Hague Cave Island, Trelawny; Frontier 2, St Mary; Belle Air and Mount Edgecombe in St Ann; and Luana, St Elizabeth.

Guy said the houses are to be sold on the open market to persons in the low- to middle-income bracket.

"This is part of the overall thrust by Government to provide housing solutions for Jamaicans. The HAJ is just one of the housing entities - the bigger and more economically capable is the National Housing Trust (NHT). Their programme will be further articulated by the prime minister in her Budget presentation," Guy said.

The NHT plans to spend $22.4 billion this fiscal year on housing activities this year. It said this will result in the creation of approximately 6,000 mortgages and will include the commencement of 2,376 housing solutions and the completion of 1,686.
