Several schools in the Corporate Area and St Catherine are being forced to close their doors because of the smoke emanating from the burning Riverton City dump.

The Ministry of Education says it has authorised the principals of schools adversely affected by the smoke to end the school day early in the interest of protecting the health of students and staff.

However, the ministry says the each school must assess the situation before deciding to classes early.

A fire began at the Riverton City dump yesterday.
