A 14-year-old student was killed at his home last night during an alleged shootout between the police and armed thugs in August Town, St Andrew.

The dead teen has been identified as Joel Lovelace, a student of the Kingston High School.

The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) says it has ordered that the cops linked to the shooting report to its offices to provide their account of the incident.

According to reports, the cops were part of the St Andrew Central Special Operations Team that had gone into the community yesterday evening on intelligence that men with guns were at a bar in Bedward Gardens.

It is understood that the police were shot at as they approached the bar and the police returned the fire.

The student was injured during the crossfire.

INDECOM says Joel was taken to hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

And the commission says the guns used in the operation have been taken out of circulation and are to be prepared for ballistics testing.

Meanwhile, the police say they are also investigating the circumstances surrounding Lovelace’s death.
