Riverton still smoking

Communities close to the Riverton disposal site in Kingston, up to this morning, remained blanketed by smoke.

This is even after the Office Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management assured that the fire will be extinguished today.

The dump has been on fire for 11 days.

However, Local Government Minister Noel Arscott says the residual smoke will not impede businesses, schools or any other activities in the area.

Arscott says he is confident that all the resources required to put out the fire and bring the situation under control are in place.

In addition, he says the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) has been allocated J$75 million to cover the disposal site.

Further, the local government minister says he is going to make a special appeal to draw down on funds from the Environmental Levy to help maintain the site until the long term goal of divesting the facility is achieved.
