Health Ministry initiates court action against Local Government Ministry over Riverton fire
The Health Ministry has initiated court action against the Local Government Ministry over the management of the Riverton City disposal site.
Speaking on Cliff Hughes Online this morning, permanent secretary, Dr Kevin Harvey, said the medical officer of health for Kingston and St Andrew sought the court's intervention on March 13.
That was two days after the fire at the dump started.
And he says a summons has been served on the Local Government Ministry for it to attend court soon.
Harvey says the summons was issued under the Public Health Act, as a result of the smoke nuisance from the fire which has been burning at the dump since March 11.
And he explains that initiating court action is the most extreme step taken by the Health Ministry in relation to the Riverton dump to enforce provisions under the Act.
