Situation at Riverton dump 'moving from response to recovery' – ODPEM
The Office of the Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), says operations at the Riverton City dump are now at the recovery stage.
In updating our news centre this morning, ODPEM’s director general, Major Clive Davis, said the Jamaica Fire Brigade is now in the final stage of putting out the fire.
He explains that this involves the fire-fighters searching for hotspots and using water or soil to extinguish any fire.
ODPEM has been leading the situation at Riverton which has been designated a national emergency.
At least two deadlines to extinguish the fire at the dump have been missed.
And more than 800 people have had to seek medical attention as a result of the smoke from the fire which covered sections of the Corporate Area and St Catherine.
The fire has been burning since March 11.
